On Maggots vs. Cobras

“Learn from my misfortunes … Last week I thought twelve centimeters was not enough to satisfy my wife. How will I satisfy her with no centimeters?”

These were the words of a Thai man who had fallen for a con—a fake penis enlargement treatment that a large number of men in Chiang Mai, Thailand, had heard about.

It sounded too good to be true—and, of course, it was. The con men would inject a “magic potion” (actually a mixture of olive oil, chalk, kapok, and pieces of the telephone directory) into the victim’s penis—and the penis would immediately get larger. Unfortunately, that’s because it was swelling from the injection. A few days later it would become extremely infected. And a few days after that it might even need amputation.

The hospital was getting flooded with men suffering the consequences of the treatment. And the doctor who had been treating the afflicted men issued the following statement in the local press, hoping to dissuade anyone who was still tempted:

“Remember that a happy maggot is better by far than a gorgeous king cobra.”
